The importance of protecting our water as a precious resource cannot be overstated at the beginning of the 21st century and it will only become a matter of greater urgency for coming generations. As students mature, an increasing understanding of the breadth and complexity of these issues, from water conservation to global questions of ownership will become possible. From an early age, however, a sense of responsibility towards this vital resource can be fostered, and this is where the arts can work hand in hand with education. Whether we are adults or children, experiencing a live theatre performance is a unique event, full of potential. It is our happy job to share this special time with infant and primary school students in a way that delights, enriches and brings a splash of something different to the school week. Once Upon a Cloud offers students an opportunity to stretch their imaginations and their understanding of what constitutes 'theatre' by balancing the transparency of a stripped back set and design with the mystery and magic which is its age-old allure. As well as being entertaining, Once Upon a Cloud's water theme can help to orientate the students to this contemporary concern. Images and actions within the show present concepts about water's characteristics and its life-supporting role. These visual and imaginative messages create a mood of receptiveness whether it be for intellectual understanding of the water cycle or practical water-saving habits! |
