This July, Curious Legends is working with Port of Newcastle to present our Out of the Box series – direct from our Newcastle Studio! Using recycled materials, trash, and LOTS of imagination, participants will help us create material for The Garbage Project next February – a huge site specific performance we’re creating with Newcastle City Council!

A limited number of participants will be invited into our studio for each workshop, GO HERE if you’d like to book a place! Each workshop costs $5 for studio participants – adults are encouraged to join in with their kids. All workshops will ALSO be live streamed from this website, Facebook Live, and YouTube, with participants joining in from home. (see below for more details – online engagement is free)

Our theme for July is Trash. What do we do with it? Through cool guest artists and quirky activities, come join us to find out!

Trash Sounds – Tuesday, July 7th @ 4pm to 5:30pm

Are you a Trash Goon? What about a Sea Urchin? Come join Julien & Mitch this Tuesday to find out!

In a live performance/jam/making session, kids and their adults are invited to join in this fun cross-cultural theatre collaboration. Themed around creating a living soundscape with Trash, Julien Poulson (The Cambodian Space Project) and Mitchell Reese (Curious Legends) will share a workshop exploring characters, performance, crazy sounds, and creative ways to PLAY Trash! Live-streamed from Newcastle, kids from Cambodia at the Fish Island Arts Center will also join in! As the Sea Urchins, they will be exploring material with their OWN trash, then sending us a video later in the week. During THIS workshop, we’ll be sharing videos from the kids at Fish Island!

Trash Goons! – Wednesday, July 8th @ 10am to 11:30am

What’s a Trash Goon? Join us to find out! Zackari Watt from Fingers Crossed Creative will show you how to make crazy costumes to Goon around in. Using cardboard, trash, and other recycled materials, learn how to make crazy costumes, then become a Trash Goon! This workshop has a limited number of places in our studio, however will be live-streamed for participants at home. Are you a Trash Goon?

Join Conor, Josh, and Mitchell from Curious Legends to make some Trash Goon videos! Using costumes, characters and soundscapes from our Trash Sounds and Trash Goons workshops, we’ll be creating videos to use in our BIG theatre performance, The Garbage Project, next February. Joining in from home? Create your own videos, then send them in for inclusion in the project!

City of Boxes – Tuesday, July 14th @ 4pm to 5:30pm

Boxes make the coolest things… Join Helen Hopcroft to build a City of Boxes, then help us plan how to bring it to life! Everything made will be used in our ‘Recycled City’ film on Thursday (but you can take yours home after that!). Are you a builder? Got cool ideas of what could go INSIDE the buildings? Come join us to find out!

(Helen currently has an AWESOME exhibition – The Re-enchantment – on display at MRAG! Check it out HERE to see heaps cool things you can do with boxes!)

Crazy Toys – Wednesday, July 15th @ 10am to 11:30am

Join Georgia and Josh from Curious Legends to make the COOLEST tiny vehicles! Using trash, paper, cardboard, recycled materials and random toys, help us make a FLEET of futuristic machines to bring our Box City to life!

Recycled City – Thursday, July 16th @ 10am to 11:30am

Help us film our new Town! Using the Boxes and Vehicles made in our City of Boxes and Crazy Toys workshops, build a city with us then bring it to life through object theatre and puppetry! There may even be a Teddy Bear Godzilla crashing through the town… We’ll be creating scenes and making videos to use in our BIG performance next February – The Garbage Project. Participants joining in from home can send in their own videos for use in the performance!
